A getaway to Osuna, its corners, flavours and fun activities
Give yourself a citybreak from Seville and getaway to Osuna, explore its streets, hideaways and experiences that will amaze you!
86 kilometres from the capital city of Seville and set in the countryside is the village of Osuna, with 18,000 inhabitants and many hideaways full of history and beauty alongside a series of fun activities that we will explain below, which you will definitely want to see, if you haven't already done so.
Osuna can be divided into 2 parts: A lower part, packed with incredible squares, streets and façades, like the famous Calle San Pedro street that you can see below, named one of the prettiest streets in Europe.
Stately houses and Baroque palaces such as this one, the Marqués de la Gomera, which has been reformed as a Hotel and restaurant which still retains its charm.
And a high part, with more than 3000 years of history, used by Romans, Muslims and Iberians to divide and control possible enemies and which can be reached by going up a steep hill until reaching 3 of the most representative monuments in town that were gifted by the 4th Count of Ureña.
First, the Convento de la Encarnación. The best plan is to see the beauty enclosed behind its doors under the silence and calm of the settings. The courtyard, choir and the sweets made and sold by the sisters of the convent are reason enough to keep re-visiting a place like that.
Meanwhile the university of the Purísima Concepción. Something that many do not expect to find in a village of 18,000 inhabitants, which is today a centre affiliated to the University of Seville which not only surprising for that reason, but also due to its exterior architecture, with 4 towers.
The interior, which has a chapel with paintings from the 16th century and a pretty 2 storey courtyard giving access to the university's lecture rooms through half point arches that run across the length of the gallery. Wouldn't it be lovely to study in a place like that!?
Finally, to end the visit of the high part of the town, the Collegiate Church and perhaps one of the most representative icons of the city, which houses paintings, altarpieces and sculptures by the likes of artists such as Juan de Mesa, the disciples of Zurbarán, Juan de Zamora and Juan Bautista de Amiens.
The collegiate church is 3 churches in one and behind its doors are rooms, corridors and hideaways that you would never expect to see, such as this courtyard.
With rooms such as the chapel located beneath the Collegiate church which is considered to be the smallest miniature cathedral that exists. A treasure.
