Falla de Nigüelas
At the foot of the village of Nigüelas you will find this huge geological fault. It is an enormous section of terrain, rich in marble, with an unusual light colour. It was formed though tension in the earth's crust that broke up and moved the rocky blocks that form the fault.
These geological movements are caused by the liberation of unimaginable amounts of energy inside the earth, capable of breaking up and moving huge blocks of terrain. This fault is particularly interesting because it is relatively recent. You can see the striation and fissures caused by the blocks rubbing together. These formations are not usually so easily visible, making this site an important educational resource for understanding diverse, complicated geological phenomena.
