Peñones de San Cristóbal
The type of rock outcrops found here, at Punta de San Cristóbal, are not common on the Mediterranean coast. These three crags are composed of hard, dark-coloured rock. They are located right in the town of Almuñécar and push out into the sea, as if they wanted to part its waters.
"Peñón de Fuera" (Distant Crag) is, as its name suggests, the one furthest from the coast. In front of this is "Peñón de Enmedio" (Middle Crag), which has water between it and the other two. Finally, "Peñón del Santo" (Saint's Crag), is right on Almuñécar beach, dividing it in two: Puerta del Mar Beach and San Cristóbal Beach.
Saint's crag is the largest of the three, reaching approximately 30 metres in height. Ramps and gardens lead to its highest point, where you will find the Saint's Cross and a viewpoint with stunning views of the sea, the town and the mountains behind.
